- Minnesota Vikings: Thoughts on franchise tags, the secondary20 February 2012, 7:35 pm
A flurry of franchise tags could descend on NFL stars this week, but I don't expect the Vikings to tag any of their in-house free agents. Perhaps there's a case to be made for Visanthe Shiancoe, considering the digestible franchise figure for tight ends ($5.4 million, down from $7.3 million last season) and the Vikings' reliance on two-tight-end sets. But for a team that needs to spend wisely on more pressing needs, allocating more than $5 million to a 31-year-old tight end while in rebuilding... - Perspective on Vikings and QB evaluations in NFL draft18 February 2012, 2:28 am
So the Vikings will consider Robert Griffin III with the third overall pick, according to GM Rick Spielman. The Heisman winner will get a look from the Vikings. He'll work out for the Vikings, possibly in a private setting. He might visit the Vikings. Surely he'll interview with the Vikings. Griffin would have to be pretty unbelievable -- we're talking a guaranteed franchise-changer -- for the Vikings to even consider taking Griffin and essentially bailing on Christian Ponder a year after dra... - Status quo with Chris Cook, Peterson rehabbing in Houston16 February 2012, 10:14 pm
In light of GM Rick Spielman's annual pre-combine interview session with the local media, we will be updating this file for Spielman's take on the Vikings' draft, freee agency and Randy Moss. Meanwhile, a few notes... Status quo with Cook: Cornerback Chris Cook and the Vikings are in a holding pattern as Cook’s felony domestic assault case plays out. A few news and notes for you... Winfield healed: Last year, cornerback Antoine Winfield predicted he'd be fully recovered from a broken collarbone by April. Turns out he's ahead of schedule. I've been told Winfield is far enough along that he feels he could play today if necessary, and he's feeling no side effects from the surgery. He's still rehabbing at Winter Park, but mostly for stretching exercises during the last stages of recovery. Winfield broke his collarbone on Nov. 14 at Green B... - The Vikings and cap space entering free agency14 February 2012, 3:37 pm
Expect the Vikings to be more active in free agency than last summer, when they were pressed agianst the cap once the lockout was lifted and were hampered by the bloated contracts of aging players. Though the Vikings want to get younger and build through the draft -- at leasst this is the blueprint of general manager Rick Spielman's blueprint -- they must utilize free agency to supplement the roster, especially considering the loaded free agency class. Kevin Sei... Read more..... - Vikings would miss George Paton, Rams GM finalist11 February 2012, 6:05 pm
With George Paton's ascension as a finalist for the Rams general manger job, Rick Spielman might be starting his first free agency period as Vikings general manager without his trusty sidekick. Paton, Minnesota's director of player personnel, has interviewed twice for the Rams position and, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, is the favorite for the job while competing with co-finalist Falcons director of player personnel Les Snea... Despite being released by the Raiders this week, cornerback Stanford Routt still gets his $20 million guaranteed from the five-year, $54.5-million contract he signed last year and likely will have the luxury of picking his own team. Apparently the Vikings would like to be in that mix. ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins caught up with Routt's agent, Vann McElroy, who said the Vikings, Chiefs and Cowboys have inquired since his release. Routt has visits scheduled with the Bills and Titans. No w... - Patrick Brown signing leaves Vikings with 17 free agents to address8 February 2012, 6:06 pm
I understand you might be more excited about this list -- Sporting News' list of the NFL's top 100 free agents -- but the latest Vikings news affects the team's in-house crop of free agents. The Vikings' signing of reserve OT Patrick Brown to a one-year deal, as confirmed by agent Joe Panos, leaves the team with 17 free agents to address. Brown signed for $540,000, according to multiple reports. The retirement of Jim Kleinsasser and the signings of Brown, long snappe... It's no secret stellar quarterback play can mask roster deficiencies and help head coaches land contract extensions. Sunday night amplified that. The Vikings might have watched Eli Manning and Tom Brady throw bullets inside Lucas Oil Stadium with the hope Christian Ponder one day will manage a similar trajectory on his passes. Just as last season's Vikings felt they were a few plays from turning three wins into seven, similar optimism suggests Ponder might be a few throws from proving he can ... - Most intriguing in-house free agents for Vikings3 February 2012, 9:38 pm
Jumping back into blog mode after some time away, and with the relatively slow news day, it seems like a good time to take a look at some of the Vikings' in-house free agents under discussion at Vikings headquarters. This time of year, Rick Spielman's staff is breaking down each player as it prepares for the NFL combine and looks to fulfill needs. And as the Vikings plan to get younger in an effort to rebuild the roster, the financial decisions with in-house guys won't carry the same weight ...

Over the last three years, politicians, Senators and Governors have come and gone. But the one constant has been that Republicans and Democrats support and oppose the Vikings stadium equally. - Scenarios Under Which Trading Down Could Make Sense for Vikings27 January 2012, 8:29 pm
In a previous post, I offered the rationale for the Minnesota Vikings both retaining their number three overall pick in this year's NFL entry draft and using that pick to select USC offensive tackle, Matt Kalil. Barring an injury or arrest, I stand by that analysis. But that analysis assumes that Kalil is still on the board when the Vikings draft. The Indianapolis Colts are widely reported to have already determined that they will use the number one overall pick in the draft on Stanford quarter... - Vikings Left With Two Options in First Round of Draft25 January 2012, 7:18 pm
The success of the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, and New England Patriots in the 2012 playoffs demonstrates several points instructive for the Minnesota Vikings as they pare their 2012 draft board. Chief among these points is that successful teams are constructed by focusing on the offensive and defensive lines and that, while great receivers will boost teams, great receivers cannot overcome poor line play.In addition to the winning teams, losing teams such as Atlanta,... - How the Vikings Can Put the Egg Back Together Again in 201221 January 2012, 8:27 pm
The Minnesota Vikings face as many challenges as many of the 2011 non-playoff teams entering the 2011-2012 off-season. Those challenges are mitigated, however, by the fact that the Vikings have some high-caliber players at key positions. Those players make the team's prospects brighter than are those for teams such as the Colts, Cardinals, Browns, Jets, Bucs, or many of the other teams left out of this year's playoffs.Turning around the Vikings in short order is a tall task. And it could well... - Vikings' Hire Assures Similar Design in 201220 January 2012, 4:42 pm
On Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings announced the hiring of former Indianapolis Colts' defensive backs coach, Alan Williams. Willams' addition all but ensures that the Vikings will retain their 4-3 and Cover-2 schemes of 2011. More unsettling, continuing cronyism in hiring notwithstanding, are Williams' initial suggestions that personnel was not the problem for the Vikings' defense in 2011.Williams' hire means that the worst possible scenario--the promotion of the lightly regarded Mike Singlet... - Decision to Sever the Body and Save the Heads Leaves Vikings in Dire Straits17 January 2012, 8:07 pm
The Minnesota Vikings are coming off of their worst season in team history, finishing 2011 with a 3-13 record. In the weeks since the season ended, the organization has determined that the solution to the team's 2011 woes is three-fold: promote one of the architects of the 2011 team to lead architect, retain the services of the coach responsible for the on-field performance, and fire anyone associated with a positions of strength on the team.Following this modus operandi, the Vikings have move... - Marty Does Not Go Far Enough in Denouncing Those Cooking the Books on Behalf of the Vikings9 January 2012, 10:50 pm
Minnesota Representative John Marty has finally come out with it, the realization that the Vikings have enlisted the aid of those purportedly working on behalf of the public to identify a public-private stadium venture for the Minnesota Vikings that benefits the public beyond merely having an edifice that it doesn't even own. Marty's criticism of Ted Mondale, the crony pick of Governor Mark Dayton to head the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission while receiving pay from a separate position... - Bucs' Move Shows How Desperate Things Have Become in Minnesota8 January 2012, 7:40 pm
Near the end of last season, with the team in disarray, the Minnesota Vikings finally acknowledged their mistake in hiring Brad Childress, firing the fifth-year coach. The move created a vacancy which the Vikings filled with defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.Rather than audition candidates for the head-coaching vacancy, the Vikings did what they essentially did when hiring Childress, signing the first "candidate" that they encountered. In part, the move was an acknowledgement that the team ... - Consistent with On-Going Organizational Dementia, Vikings Fire Best Coach7 January 2012, 6:37 pm
On Friday, the Minnesota Vikings made it official--the organization truly is clueless. After agreeing to interview the former head coach of the disastrous Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Vikings showed the door to Kyle Dunbar, coach of the one consistently bright spot on their team. Asked whether he was getting a raw deal, Dunbar, playing the part of someone who knows he did get a raw deal but who also hopes to gain employment in the NFL in the near term, stated that the Vikings "did not kill my fam... - What the #&*Z!! Exploding Head News6 January 2012, 11:39 pm
In the wake of the worst season in team history, the Minnesota Vikings' first major off-season move was to promote to general manager one of the architects of that disaster. That decision came despite the availability of such experienced NFL veterans as Bill Polian and Jeff Fisher, among dozens of other equally competent talent evaluators. The decision to pass on Polian seemed logical in that Polian had had a particularly poor run in the draft in recent years and the Colts' fortunes appeared to ... - Vikings' Promotion of Spielman Another Hasty Move5 January 2012, 4:45 pm
As player personnel executive in two previous posts, Chicago and Miami, Rick Spielman endured considerable criticism for player personnel moves. His decisions led to his dismissal from both posts and resulted in his taking a position with the Minnesota Vikings that clearly was at least a partial step down from his previous jobs. Perhaps during his years as a personnel executive in the NFL, newly minted Minnesota Vikings' General Manager Rick Spielman has figured things out. As Vikings' Vice P...
